Building apprentices in demand

24/06/2009

There’s good news for anyone thinking about an apprenticeship in one of the building trades. The latest HIA-Austral Bricks Trades Report says that even though building activity has slowed down recently there still aren’t enough trades people in many areas.

The report says despite the slow down there’s only been a modest improvement in the skills shortage in the first quarter of 2009 – and the industry’s peak body is pushing for more apprenticeships. The report came out just before the Federal Government announced in the Budget that it will be spending $3.8 billion over the next four years to further support apprenticeships and traineeships.

This means up to an extra 14,000 people annually can receive support when completing an apprenticeship in a selected trade, agricultural or horticultural occupation.

Maria came right out and asked me if I felt that her being 59 years of age would prejudice her application. My response was simple: as an employer, I just need to know that the job will be done well, all tasks completed and our customers given excellent service. Maria was ready and eager to help us meet these needs.
