Information For Young People

How the Smart, Skilled and Hired Program can help you

We know there are lots of reasons why it can be hard for young people to get a job, including not having qualifications or certificates, not having access to transport to get to work, mental health or drug problems, or not having somewhere safe to live. Smart, Skilled and Hired can help you build important skills, and experience, making it easier to find work.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, you must:

  • be out of work, or working part time, or working casual hours (less than 28 hours a week) and needing to get more hours or more stable work
  • be aged between 15 and 24 at the time you register
  • have either finished Year 10 or have turned 17 years old
  • not be registered with Commonwealth employment programs like jobactive, Transition to Work or PaTH, unless you need support with things like mental health, housing, drug problems or transport to help you get a job
  • be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder (including refugee and humanitarian visa categories) or a New Zealand citizen.

Information For Employers

Understanding the needs of businesses in local communities

To deliver this program, Employment Plus intends to work closely with local employers in the Hunter and Central Coast regions of New South Wales, listening to their needs in order to understand what employment opportunities and skills gaps exist within the local community.

Find skilled and motivated staff

Every business needs skilled, well-trained and motivated staff.

By participating in the program, businesses can find job-ready employees, while giving young Australians an opportunity to enter the workforce.

In exchange, Employment Plus and the New South Wales Department of Industry will provide support to the employee, as well as you, the employer, for the first six months of employment.
