Here is an overview of the projects the Community Work Teams are currently running in Queensland.
Ipswich Logan Caboolture/Redcliffe North Brisbane

Hope SA 2 (Police Check) This activity is flexible due to the type of experience offered and the location within the ESA. This program has had success with current participants doing Diversional Therapy with Aged Care Organisations and WFD placements within state schools. Other host sites include child care centre and state primary and high schools. Activities include, child care, teachers aide, library aide, groundsperson and general clerical duties.
Hope SA 2 (General) Another flexible project with multi hosts within the general Ipswich and country areas. Host sites include Golf Clubs (grounds and clerical duties), retail and general clerical A local hospital is also included as a host site on this project and offers varied duties, such as Info Tech Support and general clerical/reception.
Computers for Kiribati 2 and Computers for the Pacific (max. 24 participants) Participants will be under the guidance of a university trained IT supervisor to upgrade used computers for distribution to non government churches, schools and charities in Kiribati, a poor 3rd world nation who would have no computers otherwise. WFD activities include upgrading Pentium 2 computers using open source software such as Red Hat, Mandrake Linux, Star Office and other appropriate software exclusively. One third of participants from the previous project of this nature went off to TAFE to do IT courses. The rest of this very well attended project at the very least gained some excellent general knowledge of Information Technology. The activity is well attended, and has a chance of nomination for The Prime Minister’s Award.

Web Page Design This is an activity that provides the participants with the opportunity to develop, design and maintain websites for not-for-profit organisations and allows these community organisations the opportunity to promote themselves in the Ipswich Area. Allows participants to gain practical experience in creating a community based portal website, interviewing techniques, design layout, web page skills, and maintenance and monitoring of an onside web and mail server computer plus the use of a secure network access to monitor and review log files. The Ipswich online website will be the online billboard that offers community groups the opportunity to promote themselves and their activities on the internet free of charge.
Salvo Experience Choice 2 This project is purely for opening opportunities for experience anywhere in the ESA where there is an opportunity on offer with any non profit organisation. This experience could be administration, grounds maintenance, retail, aged care, hospitality or IT. First Aid Certificates are available on completion of the course. We also have a selection of hosts sites available in the country areas, these could include Laidley Council and Esk Council Tourist Information Centres.
Salvo Office Retail 2 All Salvation Army retail stores in the ESA, as well as Salvation Army Corps and welfare offices in the ESA. This is for retail and office. Other hosts may be added to this from time to time. A good selection of clerical duties in both the Ipswich and surrounding areas, these sites may include Salvation Army welfare office, Ipswich Art Gallery, Ipswich Hospice care and local community groups. First Aid Certificates available on completion of the course.
Market Garden and Animal Farm As well as horticulture it embraces much of the experience that might be needed for a Jillaroo or Jackaroo. Finding a placement for them in the bush is not outside the realm of possibility either once the drought lifts. First Aid certificates available on completion of the course. Protective clothing is supplied. Two earlier activity of this type have recently been given environmental awards by the Ipswich Council. Duties include river bank tree vegetation, care of farm animals and maintenance of the plant nursery. A chain saw licence course is also available.

Renovation Construction An OH & S blue card is supplied and is essential to starting this project. Work Place safety boots are supplied and become the property of the participant. A heritage listed building (114 years old) is currently being fully renovated as part of this project. Participants are trained in use of renovation and carpentry equipment. Duties include painting and general renovation. The project also includes landscaping and will involve restoration of old furniture. First Aid certificates available on completion of the course.
Aged Care, Child Care and School Tasks This project offers a variety of locations within the Ipswich and country areas. An AFP check is required before placement, plus interview with the respective school principal if WFD participants are placed at a school. Duties include teachers and library aide, some schools offer text book co-ordination, hospitality (school canteen), gardening and grounds work. Aged care facilities are also included in the project with a variety of duties offered including diversional therapy, clerical duties and handyperson.

Toyz for Kidz Activity involves the manufacture of small wooden toys, for disadvantaged and hospitalised children. Also contains the repair and maintenance of lawn mowers, pushbike restoration, welding and minor mechanical works.
Eagleby Kitchen Involving a variety of kitchen duties such as: Customer service, preparing & blanching of vegetables, researching of recipes, general cooking and kitchen hand operations. Also includes sourcing of products, automated coffee machine operation and vacuum packaging.
Renovation Blitz Refurbishment and building renovations work to the BoysTown Family and Youth Care Services buildings and grounds. Includes carpentry, plastering, painting, lawn & garden maintenance, with the opportunity to obtain a Certificate I in Horticulture and an OH&S Blue Card.
Videos for the Community Create video's & DVD's for local community groups. Includes: Story boarding, video taping, sound recording and computer editing.
Bridgeworks A2 & B2 Work for the Dole placements tailored to employment aspirations in the following areas: Media, IT, Office Administration, Horticulture, Retail, Events Coordination, Grounds, Child Care, Food Preparation, Teachers Aid, Science and Degree applicable positions.
Salvo's Landcare & Low Ropes Course Construction Returning a local creek to its natural state and maintain existing landcare sites. Also involves designing and building a low ropes course for use by underprivileged youth from the local area.
Care Unlimited and Lead lighting Involving the distribution of food parcels, general warehousing, stock control and rotation, as well as loading and unloading of trucks. Also have the opportunity to learn coloured glass lead lighting.
The Offsiders - Truck Drivers Assistant Assist truck drivers with loading and off loading trucks at various locations. Learn basic mechanical maintenance, map interpretation and other truck offsider skills. Provides an opportunity to get a fork lift licence.

Redcliffe Historical Indexing Participants will be involved in researching and cataloguing of historical events and stories from the Redcliffe area from old newspaper articles for the Museum using modern equipment, computers and archiving techniques and research skills. The outcome of this project is to produce a CD which contains the finished record (book and database) of information which can be accessed by the public.
PC Resurrection Participants will be involved in upgrading and refurbishing donated PC’s which will then be donated back to needy community organisations. Participants will gain hands-on experience in installing and dismantling PC’s hardware and software as well as other skills using software to develop marketing materials to promote the program, minor administration tasks, maintain a computer workshop and communicate with potential donators of PC’s for refurbishing.
Home Services Access Guide Participants will be involved in researching and producing a local services resource book and CD to assist the Aged, disabled and housebound which will enable them to enjoy independent living at home. Skills you will use / learn include researching, interviewing, data entry and scanning and processing records using up to date computer applications such as Microsoft Office Professional (MS Word, Publisher, Power Point).
MacOnachie Lodge Restoration Participants will be involved in the restoration of several units which when refurbished will serve as affordable accommodation for low income residents in the area. Skills used / learned will include basic skills in building/construction such a painting, formwork, basic aspects of carpentry, and other tasks in the restoration process.
Your Choice 1A, Your Choice 1B, Your Choice 2A, Your Choice 2B, Bridging the Gap Bridgeworks will discuss your individual work experience needs and endeavour to organise a mutually agreeable placement in your local area. This could be in one of many not-for-profit area’s such as: schools, childcare centres, sporting cubs, local councils, libraries, golf clubs, aged care facilities, local Councils, etc. Skills you can use / learn may include office/clerical, teacher aide, horticulture, landscape gardening, aged care assistant, food prep/kitchen hand, etc.
Shopping Grannies Participants can choose between Retail or Aged Care experience in not for profit, community organisations stores in a variety of areas from Strathpine to Caboolture and Margate area’s. Retail positions will give the Participant experience in all aspects of working in a retail outlet. Alternatively, various aspects of work experience can be gained in an Aged Care facility assisting in area’s such as Carers Assistant, Diversional Therapy Assistant, Grounds Maintenance, Kitchen area, etc.
Salvo’s Retail Opportunities Participants will learn all aspects of retail operations in one of the Salvo’s Family Stores in area’s such as Caboolture, Morayfield, Redcliffe or Kallangur. Duties include visual merchandising, cash register operations, customer service, pricing, labelling, and general store presentation.

The River City of Life DVD (max. 15 participants) Trace the major events of Brisbane, from the landing of the SS Fortitude, to the modern day EKKA and River Fire. Produce a DVD and Booklet on the history of Brisbane, by using both video and computer equipment and various types of computer software.

Valley Heritage Videos (max. 15 participants) Involves Filming & Creation of CD; writing Text & Script on History; Graphic Design for CD cover & design of brochures, including research internet & historical documents & articles of some 20 listed heritage buildings in the Fortitude Valley.

Taringa Construction (max. 15 participants) Updating sports field area, erecting log fencing, retaining walls, landscape gardening, painting, & minor maintenance tasks (Police Check)

e-Literate (max. 14 participants) Computer experience and training platform for community groups including multi-media presentations and WEB page development; desktop publishing of publications for Oxley Chelmer History Group. Participants will be responsible for educating community groups in basic computer skills, word processing, Internet access and E-mail. Participants will develop and publish a training manual for use with each group of people. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and gain work experiences in the Information Technology and Technical field supervised by an experienced IT supervisor. Refurbishment of computers and related hardware.

St Vinnies Retail Therapy II (max. 14 participants) Participants will be involved in working in a busy retail environment. Activities will include merchandising, stock rotation, customer service, cash handling, maintaining store appearance and many other retail store activities including some administrative development.

Red Hill Paddington Community Centre Community Volunteers (max. 15 participants) This multifunctional community Centre offers work experience in the areas of Landscape gardening, Childcare, Administration, IT & Community support (Police Check required)
