Career Development Program Vocational training
Skills Enhancement Initiative

To date, The Salvation Army Employment Plus has placed over 400,000 people in work. How have we achieved this? We adopt a ‘career development’ approach to job placement. This approach is based on the premise that people will be more successful in finding long-term, sustainable employment if they are armed with the strategies, tools and resources they need to achieve self-sufficiency.

The Right Track

Right Track is a comprehensive eight-week program that includes a series of ten workshops designed to give candidates a clearer idea of their own strengths, skills and ambitions. It assists participants in determining their employment goals, identifying and overcoming barriers to employment, and developing their own personal career path. By developing a better knowledge of themselves and the workplace, candidates gain confidence and are on the path to reaching their full potential.

Career Development Program

Our intensive Career Development Program is a journey of self-discovery for our candidates. Not only does it identify their current skills and motivations, but it teaches the life and job search skills that can be used whenever the candidate wants to change jobs in the future.

The program consists of group workshops over three weeks and one-on-one meetings to develop individual job search plans and identify our candidates’ dream jobs. Backed by strong commitment, encouragement and persistence from our staff, candidates who undertake the Career Development Program seek to fulfil our aim of finding employment within 12 weeks.

Skills Enhancement Initiative

We recognise that it takes some time for a new employee to fit into an organisation. So we have introduced the Skills Enhancement Initiative (SEI), a funding program that compensates for the costs and down time associated with taking on new employees.

Employers use SEI across different aspects of the employment process, including induction, skills training, paid work trials and equipment or uniform purchases. SEI is offered exclusively by The Salvation Army Employment Plus in situations where the employer is actively seeking career-minded staff and the candidate wants to develop their career within a particular organisation.

The goal of SEI is to bridge the gap between employers and employees. It makes it easier for employers to bring in new staff, while it opens new doors to candidates.

Vocational training

The Salvation Army Employment Plus has established partnerships with vocational training providers. These partnerships give candidates the opportunity to enhance their industry skills and obtain employment while simultaneously addressing labour skill shortages.

The Salvation Army Employment Plus negotiates partnerships on behalf of the candidate, with employers and/or industry organisations. We then link skilled candidates into job placements, providing monitoring and support to both the employer and candidate for up to six months. This approach has proven especially effective in aged care, child care, viticulture and fruit picking, retail and hospitality.

Registered Training Organisations have excellent trade and industry contacts. By strengthening our relationships with these training providers, we are consolidating our network of potential employers, increasing opportunities for our candidates and satisfying an industry need. It is an effective partnership which is changing lives.
