The Salvation Army Employment Plus and the Capricorn Correctional Centre

The Salvation Army Employment Plus are working with the Capricorn Correctional Centre in Rockhampton on a pioneering program to help prisoners get a job on their release.

This is an exciting program which will make a real difference in prisoners’ lives as they prepare to leave jail and rebuild their lives in the community. In this complex times of their lives, prisoners need to reassess their lives which are about to dramatically change and getting a job is a crucial part of that.

The program is designed to provide a smooth transition to employment. Our assistance commences before the person is released. The inmate and employment consultant together identify the best possible ways of obtaining employment. Together in a 50/50 partnership, they look at resume preparation and having referees to support job applications.

As part of this initiative The Salvation Army Employment Plus, in partnership with the Queensland Department of Corrections and the Capricornia Correctional Centre, held an inaugural Employment Expo. Many local employers, industry bodies and community service providers were excited to be a part of the event. Similarly, inmates were receptive and their morale bolstered by the knowledge that there are people willing to assist them on their release.

Gold Coast TAFE  

In an innovative Queensland first, The Salvation Army Employment Plus launched their partnership with the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE in April 2004. It is an excellent instance of educational institutions and an employment agency creatively combining to improve outcomes for students and employers. Students can access on campus career advice, assessment and employment services.
