Nursing Support and Personal Care Workers have the responsibility of providing assistance, support and care to patients, in a variety of settings, including in health, welfare and community organisations.

Common duties

  • Helping patients with personal care, mobility and communication needs
  • Following therapy plans
  • Observing and reporting changes in patients’ condition
  • Reporting complaints
  • Assisting with rehabilitation tasks and exercises
  • Providing direct support to nurses, and other staff

Experience and qualifications

  • You do not need any formal qualifications to work as a Nursing Support Worker and Personal Care Worker, however VET and university are both common study pathways.
  • You may also be required to hold certain checks, licenses and tickets, including:
    • Manual handling and safe lifting practices certificate
    • Driver’s license
    • National police check
    • Working with vulnerable people and children check
    • First aid certificate
    • CPR certificate
