Decadent C’s Chocolate, Coffee and Cake is a family business based in Mandurah, Western Australia, driven by a passion for custom cakes, coffee and delectable fresh food. So, it comes as no surprise, finding a staff member with the drive and motivation to maintain these high standards could be difficult.
Enter young job seeker, Keearna. Although just 20 years old, Keearna had been searching for an employer to give her the experience she needed to thrive in a food services role.
It was through the Youth Jobs PaTH Program that Keearna was connected to Decadent C’s. The café signed Keearna up for a 12-week internship as a barista and customer service officer – the start of a gourmet working relationship.
Since the PaTH Program connected Keearna and Decadent C’s, both parties have been thriving. Decadent C’s co-owner Jenny Todd ensured Keearna received extensive on-the-job training as soon as she commenced her internship. The PaTH intern has been making excellent coffee and has been interacting with customers with a high level of professionalism. “The internship has given me so much confidence,” Keearna said. “I’ve learnt how to master the coffee machine,” she continues.
Keearna’s placement has even influenced other staff at Decadent C’s, including Head Barista, Chloe, who has now found a passion for mentoring and training junior baristas. Chloe has now enrolled in a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment so she can further impart her skills and knowledge to other young people entering the industry
As for Keearna, her internship has now finished and she has been offered a job at Decadent C’s. The future is sweet, thanks to the PaTH Youth Jobs Program.
About Youth Jobs PaTH
Youth Jobs PaTH allows employers to host internship placements of between 4 and 12 weeks, ranging between 30 and 50 hours of work experience per fortnight. An internship can help a business find out if a young person, aged between 17 and 24, is the right fit for their organisation. The business participating in PaTH will receive a payment of $1,000 to help with the costs of hosting an intern. The intern is covered by insurance purchased by the Australian Government.
There is no cost to a business to participate in PaTH. Interns are unpaid by the business where they are completing the internship. The intern receives a fortnightly incentive paid by the Government, on top of their income support payment.
If the employer is able to offer a position to the intern at the end of the placement, the business may also be eligible for up to $10,000 (inc. GST) in wage subsidies.
