Truck drivers facilitate the delivery of goods, often over long distances, and sometimes in large, heavy vehicles.

Common duties

• Manoeuvring vehicles for loading and unloading
• Delivering goods, whilst determining the most effective route to travel
• Undertaking regular safety and quality checks of vehicles, to make sure they are safe to be on the road
• Ensuring goods are securely stowed, so they can be delivered safely
• Verifying load documents, checking the condition of goods and receiving confirmation of deliveries

Experience and qualifications

• No formal qualifications are required to work as a truck driver, however a driver’s license is essential, and other tickets, checks and licenses can help your application, such as:
  • Special licenses for transporting dangerous substances, certain types of loads etc.
  • Construction induction card (white card)
  • Forklift license
  • Manual driver’s license
  • Medium rigid (MR) driver’s license
  • Heavy rigid (HR) driver’s license
  • National police check
  • Medical test
  • Psychometric or aptitude tests
