Ever stared at a job ad and thought, “do I even qualify for this?”
You’re not alone.
Behind every fancy job description is a set of clues revealing what the employer really wants. Once you learn to read between the lines you’ll start applying for jobs with more confidence.
Here is how to read between the lines of job ad descriptions…
1. Start with the three first dot points. These will list the skills that your future employer is after. The rest of the ad is often just filler words.
Make sure to look out for repeated words. These are often the most important skills needed for the job.
Pay attention to repeated words, they’re the skills that matter the most.
For example: If “customer service” pops up in both the intro and key tasks, that’s your top priority. Don’t panic about “data entry” if it isn’t repeated multiple times throughout the job advertisement, and can be learned on the job.
2. Learn the code of job ads…
What they say: “Fast-paced environment”
What they mean: You’ll be busy juggling lots of tasks, adapting to changes, and making decisions without always having a lot of time. This means that you’ll need to be organised, flexible, and ready to think on your feet.
What they say: “Flexible role”
What they mean: This can be in reference to flexible working arrangements like working from home. However, you could also be expected to take on a variety of tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
What they say: “Team player”
What they mean: You’ll need to be a strong communicator, looking to help the whole team succeed rather than just your own tasks.
What they say: “Passionate about..”
What they mean: They want to see genuine interest, motivation, and enthusiasm for what the company does or what the job involves.
3. Spot the non-negotiables…
Don’t rule yourself out just because you don’t tick every box.
- “2-3 years’ experience preferred” = not essential
- “Must have” = required
- “Nice to have” = bonus points, not deal-breakers
- “Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience” = real-world experience counts.
Focus on what you can do and the results you’ve achieved. Soft skills like communication, teamwork, and adaptability often matter more than technical qualifications.
4. Read the tone for culture clues…
Your future workplace should also be compatible with your life. Wording in job ads can say a lot about the company culture.
- Formal and polished? Think corporate or government.
- Friendly and upbeat? Likely a more creative, people-focused workplace, team interaction.
- Hands on/practical language? Words like “fix, build, trade skills, hands on” indicates a more skills-based and practical job.
Ask yourself: Does this sound like a place where I’d feel comfortable? Fit goes both ways.
