Summer means outdoor adventures and plenty of opportunities for family fun. But warmer weather also comes with some extra safety considerations. The aussie sun is no joke, and you’ve got to think about heat, food safety and slip, slop, slapping. A little preparation can help you enjoy the season while keeping your family comfortable and safe.

Beat the heat
Little ones can be particularly sensitive to hot weather. On warm days, encourage regular drinks of water and plan outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day where possible. Dress children in lightweight clothing, look for shade and make sure everyone gets plenty of opportunities to cool down.

You can make hydration a little more fun by trying homemade ice blocks, fruit-infused water or fun, kid-friendly drinks. Getting children involved in making their own icy treats can be a great way to encourage them to enjoy something refreshing while staying hydrated.

Slip, slop, slap, seek and slide
Sun protection is important whenever your family is outdoors. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen, protective clothing and hats, and seek shade during the strongest part of the day.

Solar noon is when the sun is at its highest point in the sky and UV rays hit their peak intensity. Try to plan outdoor activities around this part of the day where possible, and make sure you and your family reapply sunscreen regularly and take breaks in the shade. Sunglasses can also help protect little eyes from the sun.

Keep an eye on water play
Whether you're heading to the beach, pool or simply using a paddling pool at home, keep children within arm’s reach when they’re in or around water. Empty paddling pools and other containers after use, and make sure pools are appropriately fenced and secured.

Never leave children in cars
A parked car can become dangerously hot very, very quickly, even when the weather feels mild or the car is in the shade. Children should never be left unattended in a car, even for a short time.

The Raising Children Network has an informative article about the importance of not leaving children in cars, as well as information on legality and routines to prevent accidentally leaving a child in the car, Read more about keeping children safe in and around cars.

Stay safe around food
Warm weather is the perfect time for picnics, barbecues and meals on the verandah, but just make sure you’re keeping an eye on the food you’re leaving on the table. Keep perishable food chilled until it's ready to eat, wash hands before preparing or eating food, and don't leave food sitting out in the heat for long periods.

Plan for outdoor adventures
Before heading out, think about what your family might need. Pack water, sunscreen, hats, snacks and any medications or first-aid supplies. Double check your weather app to watch out for things like thunderstorms or extreme heat warnings. If you're heading somewhere new, let someone know where you're going.
