It usually starts innocently enough. A scroll through social media, a catch-up with an old colleague, a conversation at school pick-up. And suddenly, you're measuring your life against someone else's highlight reel and coming up short.

The comparison trap is something almost everyone falls into at some point. But for parents and carers navigating a return to work or planning their next steps, it can feel especially powerful. When it seems like everyone around you is further ahead, more confident, or more sorted than you are, it's easy to start believing that your timeline is somehow wrong.

Everyone's starting point is different

What you see on the outside of someone else's journey tells you almost nothing about what it took to get there. Their circumstances, their support network, their financial situation, their confidence, their setbacks — none of that is visible. Comparing your chapter three to someone else's chapter ten isn't just unfair to yourself. It's comparing two completely different stories.

Your responsibilities are unique to you

The juggle of raising young children while thinking about your training or a career isn’t a small thing. The hours, the mental load, the emotional labour all takes time and energy that not everyone is accounting for. The fact that you're thinking about your future at all, while managing everything else on your plate, says a great deal about your drive and determination.

Slow progress is still progress

There is no rule that says your return to work has to look a certain way or happen on a particular schedule. A part-time role, a short course, a single conversation with a career advisor — these are all valid, meaningful steps. The size of the step doesn't determine its value. The direction does.

Comparison steals joy — and momentum

Every moment spent measuring yourself against someone else is a moment not spent on your own path. When you redirect that energy inward — toward your own goals, your own strengths, your own definition of success — things start to shift. Your timeline isn't behind. It's just yours.

And that's not a consolation prize. It's actually the whole point.

The only journey worth measuring yourself against is the one you were on yesterday. And if you've taken even one small step forward since then — that's worth celebrating.
