Returning to the workforce after taking time out to raise your little ones can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to remember that your parenting journey has given you valuable skills and experiences. Employers understand that career breaks happen, and with the right approach, you can present this time positively.

Here are some tips to help you confidently talk about gaps in your resume:

Be honest and upfront. No point hiding the truth - explain the reason for your break. Keep it brief and positive.

For example: “I took time away from the workforce to raise my children and am now ready to re-enter with renewed focus.”

Highlight your transferable skills. Parenting involves organisation, problem-solving, multitasking, and communication, all qualities that employers value.

For example: “During my time as a stay-at-home parent, I managed multiple schedules, coordinated activities, and developed strong problem-solving skills I’m eager to bring to my next role.

Mention any relevant activities during your break. This could include volunteering, training courses, or part-time work that kept your skills active.

For example: “I volunteered as a parent’s group treasurer, which allowed me to continue using my administrative and budgeting skills.

Focus on your readiness to return. Employers want to know you’re motivated and prepared to rejoin the workforce.

For example: “I’m excited to return to work and apply both my previous experience and the new skills I’ve developed during my time away.”

Need some practice?

Practicing how you’ll talk about your career break can make all the difference in how confident you feel during interviews.

That’s where the Parent Pathways program comes in. Alongside practical support, our mentors offer mock interviews to help you prepare. These sessions allow you to:

  • Rehearse answering questions about your career gap in a safe, supportive setting.

  • Receive constructive feedback to strengthen your responses.

  • Build confidence so you’re ready to impress potential employers.

With preparation and support, you can turn your resume gap into a story of resilience and growth.
