Realistic ways to care for your wellbeing

Let's be honest, when someone tells a busy parent to "practice self-care," it can feel a little out of touch. Between school runs, nap schedules, meal planning, and everything else life throws at you, carving out time for yourself can feel like a luxury you simply can't afford.

But we're not talking about a spa day or a two-hour morning routine (as nice as that would be). Real self-care for real parents looks a lot more ordinary and a lot better for you.

Drink water and have a bite to eat

It sounds almost too simple, but basic physical needs can sometimes be the first thing to go when life gets busy. Staying hydrated, eating something nourishing, and getting outside for even ten minutes can genuinely shift how you feel. Try starting there.

Say no to one thing this week

Overcommitting is exhausting. Giving yourself permission to decline something, like an event, a favour, an obligation that doesn't serve you right now, is an act of self-respect. You don't need to over-explain. "I can't make it work this time" is a complete sentence.

Find five minutes that are just yours

Five minutes of quiet with a cup of tea. A walk around the block alone. A favourite song in the car before you head inside. These tiny pockets of time matter more than you think. Protect them where you can.

Talk to someone (and we mean really talk)

A quick vent to a friend, an honest conversation with a partner, or a chat with a support worker who genuinely listens.

Let "good enough" be enough

Perfectionism can be a huge drain on your energy. The house doesn't need to be spotless. The lunchbox doesn't need to be Instagram-worthy. Letting go of the pressure to do everything perfectly is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself.

Acknowledge what you're doing

You are doing something super hard! Raising children, managing a household, thinking about your future - often all at once. Take a moment to recognise that. You're doing better than you think.

Self-care isn't about adding more to your plate. It's about making sure there's something left in the tank for you and taking time to remember that you matter too, not just as a parent, but as a person.
